You might think of mould as just a patch of black in the bathroom or a bit of mildew on a window sill. But mould isn’t always visible, and it can wreak havoc on your health without you even realising.

Did you know?

🍏 Up to 50% of homes have damp conditions supporting mould growth (WHO, 2009).

🍏 Over 25% of people have a genetic predisposition that makes them poor at clearing mould toxins - HLA DQ and HLA DR variants (Dr. Shoemaker, 2014). This means not everyone in a house needs to feel sick - it could be just one person reacting, which makes mould harder to spot as a cause.

🍏 Indoor mould exposure is linked to chronic fatigue, cognitive problems, hormonal disruption, mood disorders and immune issues (CDC, 2023).

I see it time and time again in clinic: clients who are doing “all the right things” with nutrition, supplements, and lifestyle, but something still isn’t shifting. Their energy remains low, their brain fog won’t clear, or their immune system is constantly triggered.

And yes, it could be mould.

The important difference between mould spores and mould mycotoxins

It’s important to know that mould spores and mycotoxins are completely different - and they can be mutually exclusive. Mould spores are living particles that can trigger allergies in some people, while mycotoxins are toxic chemicals produced by mould. You can have a negative allergy test to mould spores but still be suffering from the effects of mycotoxins, which cause inflammation, immune disruption, and neurological symptoms regardless of allergy status. Currently, NHS tests only check for mould spore allergies, not for mycotoxin toxicity, which requires private functional testing. This is why mould illness often goes unrecognised in standard medical investigations.

The Hidden Dangers You Can’t See

Mould isn’t just unsightly. It releases:

💥 Mycotoxins

Toxic chemicals produced by moulds like Aspergillus, Stachybotrys, Fusarium, and Penicillium. They’re so tiny you can’t see them, you can't smell them. They travel deep into your lungs, cross into your bloodstream, and build up in tissues. Note - this is NOT the same as mould spores.

Mycotoxins have been linked with:

  • Brain fog, memory issues, difficulty finding words

  • Mood swings, anxiety, low mood

  • Balance issues, dizziness, vision changes

  • Fatigue, sleep disturbances

  • Frequent infections, allergies, asthma flare-ups

Mycotoxins have even been shown in studies to reduce frontal cortex activity in the brain, similar to a mild traumatic brain injury (Kilburn et al., 2009).

💥 Beta Glucans

Sugars from mould cell walls that trigger immune reactivity. High indoor levels are linked to coughing, throat irritation, headaches, asthma, and allergic responses.

Key Questions: Could This Be You?

Ask yourself:

🍏Do your symptoms get worse in certain rooms or buildings?

🍏 Do you feel better when you’re away from home (e.g. on holiday)?

🍏 Do you have more symptoms in damp, rainy weather or autumn?

🍏 Do you have a musty smell anywhere at home or work?

🍏 Do you need antihistamines frequently but they don’t fully work?

🍏 Do you experience tiredness all the time, post nasal drip, shortness of breath, palpitations, headaches, blurry vision, dark circles under your eyes, overwhelm, thrush, ringing in ears, exhaustion after exercise, constipation, bloating, gas, diarrhoea, toenail fungus, or sleep apnoea? These are just some of the symptoms related to mould toxicity.

My Story: From Chronic Illness to Thriving Again

For me, mould was a slow burner that I never saw coming. I thought my M.E. (chronic fatigue) was well-managed. But I developed:

  • Crushing fatigue

  • Severe brain fog

  • Right-leg ataxia (my balance was off)

  • Vision changes

  • Constant, unrelenting allergies

Nothing helped. I thought it was stress or that I’d become allergic to my cat. I was taking antihistamines daily, quercetin, all my usual tools – nothing worked.

When I realised this wasn't M.E., I started to suspect mould. Trying to find the source, my husband and I pulled out a built-in wardrobe. Behind it was a shocking wall of mould. No smell. No obvious signs. But it was silently draining my health.

I have the HLA DQ2 gene, which makes me a poor clearer of mould toxins, and is also my loaded genetic gun for coeliac disease. This is one of the genotypes out of the 25% mentioned earlier. There is some evidence that mould exposure could trigger coeliac disease in genetically predisposed people, likely through immune activation and gut permeability effects. It also means that those with coeliac disease are poor clearers and they definitely have that gene. So forward this to anyone you know with coeliac disease.

I called in some experts who I have worked with for clients to do some immediate remediation, and thank goodness we did. (If you need their details, DM me – I recommend them above anyone else because mould clean-up done wrongly can make things worse.)

The Difference? Night and Day

With remediation and a gentle mould detox plan including binders, liver support, antioxidants, and targeted nutrients:

🍏 My energy came back

🍏 Brain fog lifted

🍏 The ataxia in my right leg stopped

🍏 Allergies eased

Now I’m back to my (ok, irregular) early morning runs, going to the gym when it fits my schedule, staying up later and relaxing, working with focus and clarity, and taking my kids out for fun adventures as often as I can. The difference is incredible. It crept up so slowly, like a boiling frog - I hadn’t realised how bad it had got until I felt better.

What You Need to Know

Mould hides under carpets, behind wardrobes, in walls, ceilings, and insulation.

🍏 You don’t have to smell it for it to cause harm.

💥 Mycotoxins and beta glucans are invisible enemies affecting your health without you realising.

It’s not just old buildings either. New builds can have mould problems too, especially with modern airtight construction trapping moisture. It’s not about being unclean or untidy. However, dust can make mould worse because it acts as a food source, helping spores thrive and spread.

The Hard Truth

💥You can’t out-supplement or out-eat a mouldy environment. The environment HAS to change first.

💥 Trying to clean it yourself can release even more spores and toxins into your air. They have a powerful survival instinct

💥 Professional remediation is essential. The protocol to get mould out of your body can be straightforward and extremely powerful, but only if you’re no longer being exposed.

Could Mould Be Behind Your Symptoms?

If you have:

  • Fatigue, brain fog, headaches

  • Anxiety, mood swings, poor sleep

  • Balance problems, dizziness, vision changes

  • Asthma, allergies, sinus issues

  • Frequent infections, unexplained immune flares

  • Symptoms like palpitations, blurry vision, post nasal drip, exhaustion after exercise, thrush, constipation, diarrhoea, bloating and gas, ringing in ears, dark circles under eyes, sleep apnoea, toenail fungus, or feeling overwhelmed

…it’s worth exploring mould as a root cause. I see it so often in clients who just aren’t quite getting better despite eating a nourishing diet and taking targeted supplements. Honestly, that was me.

Final Thoughts

🍏 Mould illness is far more common than people think

🍏 Mycotoxins affect almost every system in your body - neurological, hormonal, immune, respiratory

🍏 Once you tackle the environment and support your body to detoxify safely, healing is absolutely possible
