“You’re a Nutritional Therapist, so do you basically tell people what to eat?”
I get asked this a lot. And yes, nutrition is a very important part of what I do, but Nutritional Therapy goes much further than simply giving you dietary advice.
As a BANT Registered Nutritional Therapist, I use a functional approach to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and why you might not be feeling as well as you should.

What is Nutritional Therapy?

I sta
I start with you.
I take a detailed health and lifestyle history, looking at your symptoms, medical history, medications, diet, digestion, sleep, stress, hormones, energy and previous test results.
I then start joining the dots between different symptoms and systems rather than looking at each problem in isolation.
I look at what might be happening underneath
Depending on your symptoms, I may consider areas such as:
-
digestive function and the gut microbiome
-
nutrient deficiencies or insufficiencies
-
blood sugar and insulin regulation
-
thyroid function
-
hormonal health
-
inflammation and immune function
-
liver and bile function
-
cardiovascular and metabolic health
-
stress and sleep
The aim is to understand what may be driving or contributing to your symptoms, rather than simply trying to manage each symptom individually.
I use testing when it is genuinely useful
Testing isn't necessary for everyone, but sometimes it can give us valuable information that symptoms alone cannot.
I can use or arrange:
-
comprehensive blood testing
-
functional interpretation of blood results
-
comprehensive stool and microbiome testing
-
SIBO breath testing
-
DUTCH hormone testing
-
Organic Acids testing
-
nutrigenomic testing
-
nutritional and metabolic testing
all areas of which I have extensive further training and certification in, as well as 100s of cases of clinical experience.
I can also work with blood results and investigations you have already had through your GP or consultant.

I use the results to adapt your plan
Once we have a clearer picture, I translate all that information into something practical and personalised to you.
That may include changes to your diet, meal timing, protein and fibre intake, digestive support, blood sugar management, sleep, stress, movement and targeted nutritional supplements where appropriate.
You won't be handed an enormous list of things to change overnight.
We prioritise what matters most and build from there.
I review, reassess and adapt
Complex or long-standing health problems rarely have one simple cause.
That's why I usually work with clients over a number of weeks. We review what's changing, what isn't, how you're responding and whether we need to adjust the approach or investigate further.
Where appropriate, we can also retest to objectively measure progress.

I work alongside medical care
Nutritional Therapy is complementary to, not a replacement for, medical care.
If something requires investigation by your GP or another healthcare professional, I will tell you. Where appropriate and with your consent, I can also communicate with other practitioners involved in your care.
And yes... I also give dietary advice.
But that's only one part of what Nutritional Therapy is about.
For me, it's about understanding the bigger picture, finding out what may be contributing to your symptoms and giving you a personalised, realistic way forward.

You do not need another diet to try to stick to, you need a personalised plan that takes in to account how your body works.
